A Crown dependency of GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.), one of the CHANNEL ISLANDS west of the
French coast, including the islands of ALDERNEY, Herm, Jethou, Sark
and Brechou. Agriculture and cattle breeding are the main occupations.
During World War II German troops occupied the island from June 1940 until May
1945. First stamps were issued locally in 1941. Prior to that stamps of Great
Britain were in use. Between 1958-1969 Great Britain issued regional stamps sold
only in Guernsey, bearing the monarch's portrait. Since October 1st, 1969
independent postal administration was established, issuing own stamps, mostly in
British design. Indirect UPU membership through Great Britain. Annual output
about 30.
