A Republic, located in northeast Africa, between Egypt and Ethiopia. Agriculture
and livestock are the chief occupations.
In 1899 an Anglo-Egyptian condominium was formed to govern the state. Self
governing since January 9th, 1954 and independent as a republic since January
1st, 1956. Democratic Republic since May 25th, 1969.
First stamps issued in 1897. Indirect UPU membership from July 1st 1875 under
EGYPT, direct from July 27th, 1956. A unique and well know issue is the 'Camel
Rider', appearing in minor variations for 56 years (until 1954). Annual output
about 25.
