Formerly TANGANYIKA and the island of ZANZIBAR. In 1964 Tanganyika and Zanzibar
joined to form the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, afterwards
renamed as United Republic of Tanzania. A member of the British Commonwealth
(see GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.)).
First stamps issued in 1965. Several indirect UPU memberships, direct from March
1963 as Tanganyika and afterwards as United Republic of Tanzania. Annual output
about 500. The high production mainly aimed at the philatelic market, with no postal
