Area - 181 sq.km; Population - 70,800; Capital - Majuro
A Republic, group of islands in the mid-Pacific. Economy mainly based on
fishing, growing of coconuts, cacao and fruit, tourism becoming an important factor.
A Protectorate of GERMANY between 1885-1914, when occupied shortly by New Zealand.
In 1915 the islands were overtaken by Japanese forces (except for the island of
NAURU) and in 1920 it was mandated to JAPAN by the League of Nations. In 1944 it
came under US occupation, and since 1951 a UN trusteeship under administration
of the UNITED STATES (U.S.A.). In 1984 it became an independent Postal Territory and in
1990 the UN trusteeship came to an end.
Stamps were issued between 1897-1901 as German Protectorate, 1914-15 British
Occupation. Between 1915-1944 used stamps of Japan, between 1945-1984 stamps of
the United States and since then again stamp issuing. Annual output about 60.
