Area - 389,362 sq.km; Capital - Salisbury
Formerly SOUTHERN RHODESIA and part of the Federation of RHODESIA AND NYASALAND,
located in southeastern Africa. Came into existence on November 11th, 1965
when unilaterally declaring its independence as Rhodesia. In March 1970 became a
Republic. In March 1978 an agreement was signed with a moderate group of black
leaders to form a black majority ruled state, unrecognized by Great Britain.
Finally, on April 18th, 1980, a form of independence was agreed upon, the state
changing its name to ZIMBABWE and remaining in the British Commonwealth. First
stamps issued in 1892 for the British South Africa Company territory. Stamp
issuing as Rhodesia between 1965-1978.
