Originally a sultanate, protectorate of GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.) since 1887, administratively
connected to Ceylon. Gained independence on July 26th, 1965, again as a
sultanate. Republic since November 11th, 1968. Now a member of the British
Commonwealth (temporarily left between 1965-1982).
First stamps issued in 1906. Direct UPU membership since August 15th, 1967.
Annual output about 180.
