A Republic bordering the Black Sea, one of the five Balkan States in
southeastern Europe. Economy based on agriculture and industry, exporting
machinery, metals, etc.
Formerly part of the Ottoman Empire and its Vassal Princedom between 1878-1908,
when full independence was gained, and a Kingdom proclaimed. In 1885 the
territory of EASTERN RUMELIA was annexed and renamed as Southern Bulgaria.
During the Balkan Wars Bulgaria established a claim and acquired territories in
THRACE (which is today divided between Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey). In 1941
MACEDONIA temporarily became part of Bulgaria, until occupied by German troops
in 1944. After World War II the Kingdom was abolished and a People's Republic
established in 1946 and since 1990 a Republic.
First stamps were issued in 1879. Indirect UPU membership since 1875 under
Turkey, direct since July 1st, 1879. Annual output about 60.
