A Kingdom, peninsula located in northern Europe, on the Baltic Sea. Developed
country, whose economy is mainly based on agriculture and processing of food
products. Dairy, meat and fish products, iron and chemicals are exported.
Denmark, the formerly leading member of the Scandinavian states, still controls
the overseas territories of GREENLAND and the FAROE ISLANDS which are an
integral part of it, though having inner self government and are self stamps
issuing. ICELAND (ISLAND) was formerly united with Denmark, both states being ruled by
the same sovereign, until 1944 when it became independent. SCHLESWIG, an area in
the south of the state, formerly under Prussian-Austrian joint administration,
was returned to Denmark After World War I following a plebiscite. Denmark also
owned the overseas territory of DANISH WEST INDIES, which was sold to the U.S.A.
in 1917, known since as U.S. Virgin Islands.
First stamps issued in 1851. Direct UPU membership since July 1st, 1875. Annual
output about 30.
