An autonomous group of islands located in the West Indies, Caribbean Sea,
including the islands of Curacao and Aruba. Economy based on refining of crude
oil and tourism.
Formerly the Dutch Colony of CURACAO, which became autonomous within the Union
of the NETHERLANDS (HOLLAND) in 1948. Since December 1954 gained the status of Overseas
Member of the Netherlands, with complete domestic autonomy. In 1986 the island
of ARUBA gained a separate status and began issuing own stamps. Stamps issued
since 1949. Indirect UPU membership from 1877, direct from 1922 as Curacao.
