Information
Corner letters and plate numbers appear on early British stamps (until 1884).
The purpose for this was as a precaution against forgery. Some have two corner
letters and others four corner letters, specifying row and column in a sheet.
Combination of these letters indicates its exact location within the sheet.
Plate numbers on stamps provide various information for specialized collectors.
