Area - 823,172 sq.km; Capital - Windhoek
Formerly a German colony, located in southwestern Africa, bordering on the
Atlantic Ocean. A German colony between 1888-1915. After World War I mandated
to SOUTH AFRICA (R.S.A.) by the League of Nations. Gained independence in 1990 and was
renamed NAMIBIA. First stamps were issued in 1897 for the German colony of South
West Africa, and between 1923-1990 as a province of South Africa. Until 1931 all
were overprints on stamps of South Africa. From 1968 only `SWA` inscription
appeared on stamps.
