Formerly a Boer Republic, located in South Africa north of the Cape of Good
Hope. An independent Boers State between 1854-1900, inhabited mostly by the
Boers. With the outbreak of the second Boer War (1899-1902) the entire area went
gradually under British occupation and since 1900 was called
`ORANGE RIVER COLONY`, existing until 1910 when united with CAPE OF GOOD HOPE,
NATAL and TRANSVAAL to form the Union of SOUTH AFRICA (R.S.A.). Since the British
occupation, Orange Free State stamps were used with overprints of V.R.I.,
afterwards Cape of Good Hope stamps with the overprint of Orange River Colony
and later on with E.R.I., until stamps with own name inscription appeared.
Stamp issuing between 1868-1909.
