A Republic, located in central Asia, north of Afghanistan.
Uzbekistan's most prominent products are textiles, food processing, machine building,
metallurgy, natural gas and chemicals. RUSSIA conquered Uzbekistan (former part of
TURKESTAN (RUSSIAN)) in the late 19th century. Stiff resistance to the Red Army after
World War I was eventually suppressed and a socialist republic set up in 1925.
It achieved its independence upon the dissolution of the USSR (see RUSSIA, Soviet Union)
in 1991. Stamp issuing started in 1992. Annual output about 40.
