A republic located in northeastern Europe and northern Asia, the largest nation in the world.
Economy mainly based on heavy industry and agriculture.
A former multinational Empire, ruled by a Tsar dynasty whose absolutism and social
injustice arouse a nationwide rebellion which finally, in 1917 (during World War I) resulted
in the fall down of the monarchy which became to be known the 'October Revolution'.
On November 7th of the same year, the Soviet Federated Socialist Republic was
established, and the nations started issuing their own stamps separately.
As a result of the unstable situation, FINLAND (SUOMI), which was up till then a Grand
Duchy of Russia, broke away and declared its independence. In 1922, following a
merger with the UKRAINE, BELARUS (WHITE RUSSIA) and TRANSCAUCASIAN FEDERATION
the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (see RUSSIA, Soviet Union) was established.
Russia also maintained overseas Post Offices in CRETE, Russian P.O., LEVANT, Russian P.O.,
CHINA, Russian P.O. and for the RUSSIA, Armies Post.
In December 1991 the USSR splintered into 15 independent republics.
Stamp issuing between 1857-1917 and again since 1991. All first stamps appeared in
Cyrillic script, meaning 'Postal Stamp' and later on 'Post'. Annual output about 70.
