Information
The North German Confederation was established in 1867 by the States of north
Germany, initiated by PRUSSIA who was the largest and leading one. The postal
territory comprised of: BREMEN, BRUNSWICK, HAMBURG, LUBECK,
MECKLENBURG-SCHWERIN, MECKLENBURG-STRELITZ, OLDENBURG, PRUSSIA (including
BERGEDORF, HANOVER, SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN and the northern parts of
THURN AND TAXIS) and SAXONY. Stamps were issued from 1868 replacing the stamps
of the above individual stamp issuing states. These were followed by stamps of
GERMANY, when the empire was established in 1871.
