A French Overseas Territory, group of islands located in the South Pacific, east
of Australia. Rich in minerals, has the largest nickel deposit in the world.
A French colony until 1946, when it became an overseas territory of FRANCE, a
status which it still holds. WALLIS AND FUTUNA ISLANDS were its dependencies
until 1959, several other dependencies under its administration, non stamp
issuing. In 1958 and in 1972 the inhabitants voted in favor of remaining within
the French Community. New Caledonia has extensive inner autonomy.
First stamps primitively issued in 1859. Direct UPU membership (as French
colony) from 1876, indirect from December 24th, 1977 under France. Annual output
about 25.
