An overseas department of France, former French Protectorate, one of the Comoro
Islands, between Madagascar and the east coast of Africa, in the Indian ocean.
It incorporated into MADAGASCAR (MALAGASY) in 1908 together with the other
Comoro Islands - ANJOUAN, GRAND COMORE and MOHELI as 'Province de Mayotte
et depenendances' and stamps of Madagascar came into use. In 1912 became a colony.
The Comoros broke away from Madagascar in 1950 and in 1975 declared independent
as the Republic of the COMORO ISLANDS.
Mayotte, however, chose to remain French and in 1976 was given the status of an
overseas department of FRANCE, whose stamps came into use. Stamp issuing between
1892-1912 and reissued since 1997. Annual output about 20.
