A Republic, located in eastern Africa, on the Bab el Mandeb Straits, the
southern entrance to the Red Sea. The economy is mainly based on cargo
transshipment by rail between the port of Djibouti and Addis Ababa. Fish and salt
are being exported.
A former French Protectorate, which together with OBOCK, became part of
FRENCH SOMALI COAST (French Somaliland) in 1902. In 1967 it became an overseas
territory of FRANCE, known as French Territory of AFARS AND ISSAS. In 1977
gained independence as the Republic of Djibouti.
