Information
A small island in the Mediterranean near the coast of Syria. This was the first
place in SYRIA occupied by FRANCE during World War I. A French Post Office
opened on the island in 1916, issuing only in that year overprints on stamps of
FRENCH LEVANT, being valid until 1923. The island was included in the French
mandate of ALAOUITES and then of Syria. Today Arwad, part of Syria.
