Former British Protectorate, located in the Persian Gulf on the coast of the
Arabian peninsula. Seven Sheikdoms and their dependencies were included:
ABU DHABI, AJMAN, DUBAI, FUJEIRA, RAS AL KHAIMA, SHARJAH and UMM AL QIWAIN, not
as one entity.
In 1892 an agreement of protection was signed with Great Britain. In 1971-72 it
became the UNITED ARAB EMIRATES. Since 1909 Indian stamps were in use, and since
1948 British stamps surcharged by the local state's currency. Between 1961 and
1963 stamps with inscription 'TRUCIAL STATES' were issued, being out of value
when the British Post Office in Dubai closed down. After that each state
gradually began own stamp issuing.
