An Independent State, island in the West Indies, the largest one in the Windward
group, southeast of Puerto Rico. Economy based on agriculture, bananas are the
chief export.
A former crown colony of GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.), formerly part of the LEEWARD ISLANDS and
then under administration of the Windward Islands. Associated state of Great Britain
from 1967, gained its independence on November 3rd, 1978 and renamed as
Commonwealth of Dominica, within the British Commonwealth.
First stamps issued in 1874. Indirect UPU membership from July 1st, 1879, direct
since January 31st, 1980. Annual output about 160.
