Area - 17,818 sq.km; Population - 2,041,000; Capital - Kuwait
A Sheikdom located on the Arabian peninsula, at the northwestern corner of the
Persian Gulf. From 1871 was part of the Ottoman Empire. From 1899 under British
protection and from 1906 a British Protectorate until 1961 when it became
a fully independent state. An enormous petroleum production, providing 95% of
Kuwait's export. First stamps issued in 1923. Several indirect UPU memberships
since April 1899, from April 1st 1948 through British Post Office (see BRITISH AGENCIES),
from February 16th 1960 direct UPU membership as Kuwait.
