Area - 9,251 sq.km; Population - 762,800; Capital - Nicosia
A Republic, third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, located in the eastern
part of it. Agriculture and mining are its main industries.
Formerly a Crown Colony of GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.). The inhabitants of Greek and Turkish origin,
were on constant conflict over ruler ship after becoming independent in 1960. In
1974 Turkish forces invaded the island and gained control over about 40% of its
territory. In 1975, after population of both sides moved each one to its own
area, Turkish Cypriots proclaimed a separate state in the northern part (see
TURKISH CYPRUS, Turkish Republic of). Cyprus is a member of the British
Commonwealth.
First stamps issued in 1880. Since 1978 indirect UPU membership through Great
Britain, direct from November 23rd, 1961. Annual output about 25.
