In 1814 Malta became part of the British Empire on its own will, gained full
independence in 1964 choosing to have the Monarch of GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.) as head of state.
Republic since 1974, within the British Commonwealth. First stamps issued in
1860. Indirect UPU membership from July 1st, 1875 under Great Britain, direct
since May 21st, 1965. Annual output about 35.
