A Republic, occupying five-sixths of the island of Ireland, located in the
Atlantic Ocean, west of Great Britain. Agriculture and dairy farming are the
principal industries.
Formerly part of GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.), independent since 1921, except for its northern
territory which remained part of Great Britain (see NORTHERN IRELAND). Withdrew
from the British Commonwealth and proclaimed itself as a republic in 1949. First
stamps issued in 1922. Indirect UPU membership under Great Britain since July
1st, 1875, direct since September 6th, 1923. In past years very few stamps were
issued, sometimes none during a whole year. Annual output about 70.
